Design
For me, what defines the art of costume design is crafting the local reality of a production alongside the other design elements. No matter how outlandish a story is, when the garments are on the character, they should look inseparable from them. It’s never about things just “looking good,” it’s about things looking right!
My Process
Creating a collage of concepts rather than a singular interpretation of the material is part of defining the unique identity of the story. From there, it’s all about adapting the ephemeral vision to the parameters of the production.
My Personal Inspirations
My love of costumes has ultimately stemmed from my fascination with nonhuman subjects. My involvement with puppetry and animation formed the basis of my skillset. It continues to influence how I consider the movement of textiles, directing audience focus, and conveying character. Some of these inspirations are Ralph Bakshi’s work, UPA cartoons, and the Jim Henson Company.
